X11 for Windows XP and Vista

Xming running gedit on Windows XPI have spent many hours looking for a open source X11 Window System for Windows (win32), but many of the projects i found was either incomplete or based on proprietary code – except the Xming project, which is the leading Free Software and unlimited X Window server for Microsoft Windows including Windows Server 2003 and the “new” Windows Vista.

Xming is compared to many other X11 Windows Systems for Windows small and fast because it is natively compiled for Microsoft Windows. For transport Xming uses SSH, which includes Putty.

Download Xming here at Sourgeforge.net

Xming is a great application for running X11 based applications on windows.

I can confirm that the current version of the X11 Xming Server works on Windows XP and Windows Vista. I have tested Xming using putty to forward the X11 protocol stuff through a SSH connection to my Linux server.

I have tested many different X11 servers for windows, but none worked as easy and smooth as xming.

Great fast and light weight x11 server for windows. Xming works with both Windows XP and Windows Vista. I haven’t tested it with Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Server yet.

I tried this in 8.04 but there’s 1 slight problem.. everything works as expected, except.. programs GUI’s won’t load properly.

For example, I went to update Xubuntu by clicking the exclamation mark in the upper right corner of the screen and the Update manager GUI will pop up but the bar will get stuck at 50%… whereas, if I physically walk up to the computer and do it without a remote session, everything will work fine.

This happens with other programs too. I’m using XFCE with Xubuntu 8.04.. any help would be appreciated!
