How to reset a Nokia

If your Nokia phone isn’t working properly or not responding like it is supposed to do, or in cases where you just want to delete everything; SMS messages, contacts etc. Here bellow there described two ways to reset Nokia mobile phones:

Soft Reset

Soft Reset will clear pending errors and bring your mobile to an initial state by restoring Factory setting. To operate this function on your mobile, the shortcut is: *#7380#

This function apparently works on almost all nokia mobile phones.

Hard Reset

It may happen that despite you have restored your mobile to factory setting, the error still exist. In this case, it is recommended that you opt for Hard reset

Enter the code: *#7370# and press Yes to confirm initialization.

Important Notice: It is recommended that you save all important information on your phone (e.g: memo, contacts etc)
Note

To make a Hard Reset on a Nokia phone that is not willing to turn on, just press simultaneously these 3 buttons:

on/off + * + 3

Review: Nokia E66

The Nokia E66 is the new business oriented smartphone. It features a 3.2 mega-pixel auto-focus camera and updated and great working Contacts and Calendar applications. I have used the new Nokia E66 during the last month and here is my experiences compared to my old HTC Touch Cruise and my old Nokia E50. The biggest question is how well it stands up to the tasks expected of a business phone.

The button cluster on the top part of the Nokia E66 consists of dedicated end/send keys, with a delete/back key situated directly between, and left and right softkeys above. There are four shortcut keys surrounding the squared-off d-pad, as well. All but the end/send keys feature backlit labels, so that with the phone powered off, there are no visible button labels. While inconvenient in the dark with the phone powered off, this backlit label design really adds to the professional style of the handset.

The shortcut keys, starting from the top left and going clockwise, are Home, Contacts, Messaging, and Calendar. Each has 2 functions, activated by either a short press or a long press. The Home key has replaced the typical S60 menu key, with the same functionality. A single press will take you straight to the standby screen, while a long press pulls up the task manager. The remaining three shortcut buttons can be customized by the user, including the short and long press actions. The d-pad is solid, but not too firm, and I found it to be a pleasure to use. All four directions, as well as the center button, are easy to press and provide awesome tactile feedback. There is a very handy notification light around the inside middle of the d-pad that breathes when in standby, to let you know that the phone is powered on. If you have a missed event, such as a call, email, or otherwise, the light flashes quicker, letting you know.

When you slide the E66 open, the numeric keypad is revealed. These keys feature the traditional printed labels, and the * key is now a shortcut to toggle Bluetooth on and off, while the # key is still a shortcut to the Silent profile. The power button is located on top of the handset, and is crafted from bright red plastic, making it much easier to find over those on previous Nokia handsets.

The right side of the E66 is full of buttons. At the top is the volume up and down keys, with the Voice Recorder button located directly between them. Annoyingly, this button cannot be reprogrammed. Below this is the two-stage camera shutter key. However, similar to the Nokia E90, this dedicated camera button does not actually launch the camera application, so you are forced to waste a shortcut on the camera, or fumble through the phone’s menus to get to it.

The left side of this smartphone is where you’ll find the micro-USB port, IrDA port, and 2.5mm audio port. A standard Nokia 2mm power port is located on the bottom left of the handset since the micro-USB port can not be used for charging. The back panel of the E66 houses a mono speaker and 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, but there is no protective lens cover built-in.

TomTom Navigator Symbian S60 – Nokia N95, E66, E71 and others

TomTom is a tremendous achievement and a true killer application, with a beautifully honed interface and rock solid functionality. TomTom is now available for Symbian-based mobile phones with built-in GPS receivers like Nokia N95, Nokia E71, and Nokia E66.

There are reports here that indicate that the software is able to run on a Nokia 6110 navi too.

Review: HTC Touch Cruise and HTC Polaris 100

HTC Touch Cruise

Back in September I got a HTC Touch Cruise.

User Experience
The phone is very slow to boot and become ready to use. It has boot times, which could be compared to normal Windows-based computers, which means around 20-50 seconds.

The user interface and the user interaction feels sluggish, very sluggish in fact. I upgraded to the newest firmware version available, but it didn’t reduce the slowness.

Compared to the Apple iPhone user interface and user interaction the iPhone is ages ahead.

The single positive thing about the HTC Touch Cruise is the availability of the TomTom navigation software, which transforms the HTC Touch Cruise into a really full-blown car navigation system.

Last week I turned down on my HTC Touch Cruise and started using my old Nokia E50 again as it is a lot more faster to use.

Dalvik: How Google routed around Sun’s IP-based licensing restrictions on Java ME

[...] Google released the Android code and I took a serious look at its internals… and found the solution for the licensing problem. It’s called Dalvik and it’s the new name of Sun’s worst nightmares.

Dalvik is a virtual machine, just like Java’s or .NET’s.. but it’s Google’s own and they’re making it open source without having to ask permission to anyone (well, for now, in the future expect a shit-load of IP-related lawsuits on this, especially since Sun and Microsoft signed a cross-IP licensing agreement on exactly such virtual machines technologies years ago

[...]

Android uses the syntax of the Java platform (the Java “language”, if you wish, which is enough to make java programmers feel at home and IDEs to support the editing smoothly) and the java SE class library but not the Java bytecode or the Java virtual machine to execute it on the phone. [...]

The trick is that Google doesn’t claim that Android is a Java platform, although it can run some programs written with the Java language and against some derived version of the Java class library. Sun could prevent this if they had a patent on the standard class library, but they don’t and, even if they did, I strongly doubt it would be enforceable since Android doesn’t claim to be compatible (and in fact, could very well claim that their subset/superset is an innovation on the existing patent and challenge Sun’s position).

[...]

Not only this allows Google to avoid having to battle thru the JCP for any change to the Java ME “standard” or tolerate Sun’s unique ability to veto any JCP change, but gives users a much more ‘fresh’ and modern class library to play with and built-in hooks to all the hardware features of your phone, including things like OpenGL, bluetooth, USB and all those things, which don’t come with the standard Java ME and therefore cannot be taken for granted by the developers.
