Safari on Linux

This is a four step guide to get Apple’s Safari browser running on Linux.

  1. Run winecfg, set Windows version to WinXP
  2. Copy the core windows fonts: cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/{Arial,Times_New_Roman}*.ttf ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/
  3. Download Safari for Windows from the Apple homepage
  4. Run the Safari installer with Wine. Do not install Bonjour or the Apple updater
  5. Run Safari

Remind that the msttcorefonts is required ;)

Thanks to Erich Schubert for providing the guide

I did verify that winecfg Windows Version is WinXP

I am running Ubuntu and I do not have this folder – /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts

I followed the guide, works almost great. I can’t access any Secure Webpages via Safari/wine. The advanced setup tab opens but I can’t get to internet settings (called proxies on here). All plug ins look good, accepting cookies, yada, yada.. any ideas?

    Thanks Ed

Rather than emulating, what seems to be the problem with having a real version for Linux? Especially with the latest greatest Firefox3′s poor/slow performance, people are looking for a new/better option for Linux.

    “latest greatest Firefox3’s poor/slow performance”
    ???
I found the exact opposite. It flies along and has a far smaller memory footprint.

    Hi
Why is Apple not releasing its Linux version of safari? Isn’t there any other options except WINE ? Thanks
