This short tutorial walks you through hacking and cracking WPA/WPA2 based networks which use pre-shared keys.

WPA/WPA2 supports many types of authentication beyond pre-shared keys. aircrack-ng can by now only crack pre-shared keys. So ensure airodump-ng shows the network as having the authentication type of PSK.

If you know howto hack or crack a WEP based network, you might know that the WEP cracking and hacking methods are based on statistical methods. This WPA/WPA2 is unlike the WEP hacking / cracking approach based on plain brute force techniques. The brute force method is rather slow, since the pre-shared key can be from 8 to 63 characters in length, which might require too much time to crack.

A new project called Pyrit is currently under it’s way. “Pyrit takes a step ahead in attacking WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK, the protocol that today de-facto protects public WIFI-airspace. The project’s goal is to estimate the real-world security provided by these protocols. Pyrit does not provide binary files or wordlists and does not encourage anyone to participate or engage in any harmful activity. This is a research project, not a cracking tool.

Pyrit’s implementation allows to create massive databases, pre-computing part of the WPA/WPA2-PSK authentication phase in a space-time-tradeoff. The performance gain for real-world-attacks is in the range of three orders of magnitude which urges for re-consideration of the protocol’s security. Exploiting the computational power of GPUs, this is currently by far the most powerful attack against one of the world’s most used security-protocols.”

Second check to see if your wireless device is compatible with airdump before you start complaining that the software doesn’t work, Third sit down and learn shit, don’t expect everything can be done with one click action. For those who are so F*cking lazy search for bt 3 (has tools pre-installed for noobs like u and linux which can be run on boot from a cd if you afraid to lose shitty windoze). Well people, I hacked everyones WEP and some WPA in my surrounding. DO NOT USE WINDOWS for cracking, you MUST USE Linux. BackTrack3 is the best tool to do it. You can download it free on net. Have fun, there is nothing illegal in cracking someones wireless, if you don’t do anything to harm other users. So just enjoy :)
P.S. For WPA-psk cracking, that’s just pure luck. I mean, you can crack it ONLY if you have right pass in your dictionary, which is very stupid. So my recommendation is leave WPA and focus on WEP, it’s easier and you will score 99 %:))

I don’t know why I just wasted my time reading this entire thread; I knew before I even loaded the page that I wouldn’t find what I’m looking for here. Yet, for some strange reason, I could not peel myself away from the screen. The same tools are available on windows as the ones used for unix.
The problem is not the software but the drivers.

Wlan drivers on unix support modes that windows drivers do not.

So basicly, learn how to use the backtracker livecd if you really want to do this.

You CAN hack and/or crack on a Windows operating system but it’s a bit of a headache trying to get it right. i.e, patching your wifi drivers requires the use of .dll injection files just to get injection support and also, the main problem is that the Windows binaries are far more locked-down than the Linux binaries so it makes it harder to edit the source code for your drivers and everything. But it IS possible.

And to all of you who are telling all the newbies to stfu and shit, why don’t you grow up. You’re just as bad as you’re claiming the newbies are to be!
They need to learn and with the hacking/cracking communities full of dickheads like you, it’s hard for them. You can’t ALL expect them to learn this stuff from Google alone, they need a little bit of advice here and there.

So yeah, I can crack wireless networks, assemble and dismantle codes, shit like that… I use Ubuntu 9.10, BackTrack 4 and a seperate Windows hard drive which I use to build my Windows-compatible software on so before you go calling me a noob, shut the fuck up yourself and grow up.

And @ORIELY, you really are a cock… If you think you’re all that, you’d be a little bit more polite.

Here’s a good bit of advice for those who are aspiring hackers-to-be’s:
If you see advice from someone who is NOT hiding their real name, take it. Someone who is, is just another tosser that’s gonna give you shit like all the above posts.

People don’t hide their real name when they’re doing something they feel proud of – THEY are the REAL hackers! Not silly little dumb ass fucks that call people noobs and say STFU. And they can even spell correctly!

Another good note is:
Get a little bit of Linux/Bash command understanding by trying out a Linux distro (maybe Ubuntu to start) once you’re ready, try out Back Track on a USB device or a disc and boot from that. It has all the hacking tools, drivers and shit you guys need to get yourselves started as long as you have decent documentation to go with it.
Aircrack-ng is a very good wifi hacking tool which CAN be used on Windows as well as Linux even though it’s a little harder to get it working and also software called Macchanger for Linux to change your macs if you’ve been previously blocked accessing the router by your MAC addresses and yeah, some other stuff.

As long as you guys keep up the feeling that you WANT to learn this stuff, read and do as much as you can and you’ll get there some day… (Y)

Linux is great for people with alot of time on their hands and want to learn an OS with greater depth. It’s a shame about the community though. Linux will NEVER become anything more than ‘that free OS’ until the socially retarded fanboys chill out, and the devs make a product that just works. Might be a good idea to give programs names that don’t have acronyms like GIMP etc.
Linux is like an old beater.. can tinker with it all day and it still won’t get you to work. Windows has several problems, but the average user doesn’t care. It’s easy, plays the games, gets the work done, and still leaves you time to get outside.. or maybe go on a date? Abandon that finger-wagging fat swede (Linus) and get a life. His myopic vision has become a massively leveraged waste of everyones time.
