WEP was intended to provide comparable confidentiality to a traditional wired network (in particular it does not protect users of the network from each other), hence the name. Several serious weaknesses were identified by cryptanalysts â€” any WEP key can be cracked with readily available software in two minutes or less â€” and WEP was superseded by Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) in 2003, and then by the full IEEE 802.11i standard (also known as WPA2) in 2004. Despite the weaknesses, WEP provides a level of security that can deter casual snooping. Wikipedia

It’s fairly easy to crack a WEP encrypted wireless network. Infact the WEP encryption has some serious flaws in its design, flaws that make it easy and fast to crack or hack.

Install aircrack-ng – on Debian Etch by:
sudo apt-get install aircrack-ng

Then start aircrack-ng to look for wireless networks:
sudo airodump-ng eth1

Then notice the channel number of the wireless network you want to crack.

Quit aircrack-ng and start it again with med specific channel number to collect packages faster:
sudo airodump-ng -c 4 -w dump eth1

Then wait and let it collect about 500K IVS and the try the do the actual crack:
sudo aircrack-ng -b 0a:0b:0c:0d:0e:0f dump-01.cap

The MAC after the -b option is the BSSID of the target and dump-01.cap the file containing the captured packets.

A new project called Pyrit is currently under it’s way. “Pyrit takes a step ahead in attacking WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK, the protocol that today de-facto protects public WIFI-airspace. The project’s goal is to estimate the real-world security provided by these protocols. Pyrit does not provide binary files or wordlists and does not encourage anyone to participate or engage in any harmful activity. This is a research project, not a cracking tool.

Pyrit’s implementation allows to create massive databases, pre-computing part of the WPA/WPA2-PSK authentication phase in a space-time-tradeoff. The performance gain for real-world-attacks is in the range of three orders of magnitude which urges for re-consideration of the protocol’s security. Exploiting the computational power of GPUs, this is currently by far the most powerful attack against one of the world’s most used security-protocols.”

I’m studying for my A.S. in Computer Networking. I’m currently taking a networking security class, that I absolutely love. I have a paper and a presentation due in a couple of weeks on a security topic of choice. I chose WEP hacking. So I could teach myself and also get the grade. So far I’ve got aircrack-ng-win-0.9.1 to play with.
Basically, I need some GOOD instructuion. I need to be able to do this from my HP Compaq nx6110 laptop running WinXpProSP2 with a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN card. I do have a cd copy of Kubuntu Linux ready for installation on a partion if need be. If anyone could recommend a site good for beginners or also recommend any software other than what I have, it would be a great help. thanks.

Hello I was just wondeeing if there was any type of software that I could download to my Mac, so that I could just go anywahere and hop onto the Wi-FI. I though about wanting to use it at school, because they dont let us use their WI-FI, but I guess it would be some kind of federal offense to do that. i downloaded aircrack and tried to run it air dump, i entered the needed data but in the end it tells me that my driver is “incompatible” i tried to download the driver that i got redirected 2 (atheros4229) but its not 4 my wireless device…..
what else can i do??

(hint: there is nothing more risky in life than breaking a wep key simply for free web access……not worth it. but the script kiddies want it so here you go….
1. open your laptop
2. find a target AP
3.Generate a sufficient amount of encrypted data packet initialization vectors while simultaniously using another application to exploit the weaknesses of the RC4 algorithm. Using an interface capable of packet injection will expedite this process. Then BOO YAH!!!! Like magic you’ll have the key

Hi yu all I noticed there is many posted up on about how to decrypt the WEP encryption on your wireless rooter (also I could found on the typical BT_HOME HUB) what has many problems with them. But what I canâ€™t pout in to prospect is all the talk on about breaking the WEP Accessâ€¦..

Well then… this is ironic. The Linux drivers for my card only support b mode, so I cannot reach the network I want to get into. However, if I use ndiswrapper (which somehow picks up better than running the same driver on Windows), it isn’t supported. Oh well. I guess I’ll just have to wait for it to come back next time my Internet goes down.

well jkey, I think you’ll need a linux-based setup to take full advantage of aircrack. Vista and the network drivers for vista aren’t built for cracking.

Have any of you guys tried Hotspotter?

It should be a tool to perform the following kind of attack:

“Hotspotter passively monitors the network for probe request frames to identify the preferred networks of Windows XP clients, and will compare it to a supplied list of common hotspot network names. If the probed network name matches a common hotspot name, Hotspotter will act as an access point to allow the client to authenticate and associate. Once associated, Hotspotter can be configured to run a command, possibly a script to kick off a DHCP daemon and other scanning against the new victim.”

Interesting tutorial, thank you! I have found another solution how to crack Wifi. On eBay I have found a guy who sells manual how to do it really EASILY and without hassle. I’ve bought it – it was cheap, and it REALLY WORKS. However, his solution works only for Intel 3945 – and I have it on my laptop. So if you happen to have Intel Wireless 3945ABG then forget all these troubles with not-working injection, go on eBay and search for “crack wifi”.

this ng software stuff says that the index number for my wireless intel 2915 abg card is in dex number 13 and it doesnt even read the card!!! I was just interested to see how easily it actually is to crack WEP. It seems pretty straight forward, but just takes a lot of time and patience.

Glad to see that with 80% of the comments to this article still having no clue how to use airodump and aircrack gives me some comfort that most people still have no idea how to crack WEP. and therefore most networks using the dated technology are still relatively safe.

If i was a fairly clever person, i would possibly embed some sort of code within the programming of this tool used for breaching other peoples security, send the relevant information to a database, and boom baby you have a nicely filed database of probable computer perpetrators.
