BisonCam ( ALi M5603C ) Linux driver round up
I have written this as a round up on my search for a Linux driver for the built-in webcam in my Asus A3N series notebook. The built-in webcam in my book is built on a micro chip from Ali and it is named m5603c, more in general the chip is sometimes refered to as m560x. I found that this m560x chip is used in a lot of different devices and even other notebooks like the Asus A6 series.
Right now – it seems that there are a few projects focusing on creating a driver for m560x chip, currently I have noticed these ones.
- SANE m5603c backend
- Ali M560x Linux Driver Project
- ALi USB2 M5603C Video Camera Controller – Seems stalled
Until now I have assembled this list of devices that are build upon the m560x chip.
- Asus Z9100G notebook series
- Sweex webcam
- Asus A6 notebook series
- Q-TEC Webcam 300 USB 2.0
- Trust SpaceC@m 360
- Creative Live Pro
- USB 2.0 Webcam 1.3 Megapixel
- Genius VideoCam Slim USB2
Please leave a comment – if you know a device or driver project not listed here

Hi, i got an asus W201 widescreen lcd monitor that integrates an 1.3 mpixel webcam, based on the same chipset.
I must say that drivers are buggy even on widows xp enviroment: the latest driver gives a choppy and low framerate (less than 1fps) output on my pc (athlon thunderbird 1200mhz on via kt133a chipset).
Is it possible to let the webcam work under ubuntu linux?

Eurocom is just another company that re-labels Clevo products. Eurocom suggests in their driver section that the manufacturer is Sertek, but after some internet snooping I’ve found that it’s the same as the BisonCam.
What I would suggest for driver development:
1) download some usb-monitor software for windows
2) run the usb monitor software
3) run a simple program in windows to view the output of the camera
4) stop the webcam app & usb monitor software
5) analyze the captured usb data based on known formats of usb messages.

olivierp said,

There’s no driver for Hardy, as _none_ of the resellers using the Ali 5602/5603 chip have released any specs for it. ALi is entirely unresponsive to email, or anything else.
To make things even more interesting, each of these chipsets uses at least 2 different types sensors… depending on who/when it was built.
The sourceforge project ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/m560x-driver/ ) is still alive, but progress is slow, due to complete lack of information from the vendors.

My experience too.
I have mailed Ali – http://www.ali.com.tw/eng/about/index.htm – and I haven’t heard anything from them yet.
I really doubt on the interest in the development of any linux driver to support their product – or or products in general.
It is very scaring, since they are part of Acer.

I had the same problem with a Zepto 2314W machine I had before… This camera is nightmarish..
See more:

They have a driver sort of working… Needs some testing, so try it if you can.

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0402:5603 ALi Corp. USB 2.0 Q-tec Webcam 300
Looks pretty much the same.
So, I’m going to give the Sourceforge driver a go. I’ll let you know what happens.

Tried with the gspca driver from http://mxhaard.free.fr/, it loads but it doesn’t work. I do have /dev/video0, but it is assigned to my mpeg-card instead of the cam.
From Sebastians post I understand this is the driver he is using. For me it obviously doesn’t work.

I think 5602 and 5603 are different devices (chips) from vendor 0402=ALi Corp.
Reading a lot of posts I remember that 5603 works in some distros but not always fine and 5602 rarely.
Some possible solutions implicate in compiling modules but for begginers, even with “recipes” , this is not always easy.
My NB is a brazilian Positivo Mobile V146 in fact a Clevo M540E/550SE (as in BIOS info). This is a typical “for W” or “anti-linux” machine.
Independently of the other devices that yet don’t work well, the webcam is a 0402:5602 ALi Corp. Video Controller known also as BisonCam in “W”.
Up to now I didn’t get it to work in Linux

I first had some green destortions with my webcam on skype. But found that:
Rename (move) /usr/bin/skype to /usr/bin/skype.real
Then create a script at:
/usr/bin/skype
Code:
#!/bin/sh
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype.real
Then give /usr/bin/skype executable permission. My links to skype aren’t broken, and there’s no need to keep a terminal open just for skype.
Best of all, my video works! (at least, the video test does.)
***Reminder: Be sure to call “skype.real” (NOT skype) to the command in the script. Calling skype in the script will cause your system to run out of memory (due to recursive calls). I made this mistake the first time. I did Ctrl+Alt+Backspace just in time. Thank goodness for the 4GB. There was a long blank screen, and then I had to manually start X again.
If u wanna read the whole thread : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997807&page=2
so now my ali webcam works like a charm on skype!!!

This is great…
I’ve been following this page for over a year now, and the posts of smaba are the final breakthrough!
On Fedora 10, on my Zepto 6625WD (built in Bisoncam: Bus 002 Device 009: ID 0402:5602 ALi Corp. Video Camera Controller) the install he suggests Just Worked!
‘make’ ran without any problem.
The libv4l libs were not copied to the correct place on ‘make install’ (I suppose because the script was written for Ubuntu?), but just installing the libv4l package (yum install libv4l.i386) did the trick.
To use Skype, you indeed have to define the LD_PRELOAD… and I’m now looking at myself in the Skype video device test window. Maybe this var could be defined on startup (in .bash.profile instead of in the skype script) to make all apps work at once? Or would this break other apps?
In each case: thanks for all the work and hints, I’m really glad the last piece of hardware on my laptop finally works. Good luck to everybody still trying to get this working.
thpar said,
January 20, 2009 @ 14:25
For further testing: this command shows the webcam input in mplayer:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so mplayer -fps 30 -tv driver=v4l:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video tv://
Chris said,

Just installed the new drivers.
Either with camorama or skype, the green LED lights up (on the camera) but no image is visible.
It’s not like before starting the video, but it’s a white static image.
I did the LD_PRELOAD method offcourse. Any ideas? Need a screenshot?

PROXIMO,
The greeny image is because some programs require the LD_PRELOAD to be defined.
Starting skype eg, you can type on the command line
$ export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
$ skype
and the image should be nice and clear…
Here, I have to do it for mplayer and skype. Kopete and Cheese work without it.

I have other problem now usually skype loads with KDE and i like that. I tried to put export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so in /etc/rc.d/rc.local but doesnt work. I made a skript that loads LD_PRELOAD & then skype and it is ok. When i put it in ~/user/.kde/Autostart it works, but the next time i boot the system i have 2 skypes running. I need to know how to to make it load as before without doing sth every time manually
Chris Mavrakis said,
February 8, 2009 @ 11:06
Leave your scrpit as is.
It seems to work.
There must be some place where you set what programs start when you enter a session. (it’s sessions in gnome)
Find skype and disable it.
