OpenOffice Gets More Features

I’m a day to day OpenOffice user and I like OpenOffice, but over time I have stumbled over features, which was lacking – compared to Microsoft Office 2007. With the release of OpenOffice 3.0 in September a number of the features that I miss the most in my daily use of OpenOffice seems to get implemented and integrated. Here is my list features that OpenOffice lacks in comparison to Microsoft Office 2007.

  1. Presenter Screen in Impress – Powerpoint has got a nifty and very user-friendly presenter view – as far as I can see, a presenter screen for Impress is in the works
  2. Support for Office Open XML – seems to get integrated too
  3. More polished UI – Calc seems to get a new theme for the 3.0 release
  4. Performance – both in terms of speed and space – My experience: OpenOffice is slow, but it seems to get better and better
  5. Native PDF-import – seems to be in the works

Password Manager – based on gnupg

I’d been looking for a top nut secure password storage, which featured an easy and user-friendly interface and incorporated support for many users without the users should be equipped with the same shared password – which in general is bad and hard to maintain in almost any organization.

I almost gave up searching and even considered writing something myself based on gnupg (wikipedia article on gnupg), but then I came across Console Password Manager (CPM). In my search I also came across KeePass Password Safe, KeePassX, and even Password Safe. The password managers I have been looking on are all characterized by using a single shared password for encryption and decryption of the password storage, except from Console Password Manager (CPM), which uses private public keys instead of shared symmetric keys.

Console Password Manger (CPM) is written by Harry Brueckner and incorporates a number of great features; it’s console-based – some will argue that console application aren’t userfriendly – but think again – it really is more friendly to access through a slow remote connection, security is well-considered in it’s design, and finally it relies on the GPG keys for encryption, which is wide-used and already incorporated in many other systems – mail clients, mailing in general and for signing software, just to mentioning a number of places, moreover it seems to be well-maintained.

How to Mount a Remote Filesystem Using SSH and sshfs

From time to time I work on remote servers and some times it would be very useful to be able to mount the remote file system on my local machine. Recently I found sshfs, which is a filesystem client based on the SSH File Transfer Protocol and since most *nix like servers; Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD servers with OpenSSH installed already support this protocol it is very easy to set up – Read: on the server side there’s nothing to do, setup or configure. On the client side mounting the filesystem is as easy as logging into the server with SSH.

Technically (more) the sshfs is based on FUSE, which is the best userspace filesystem framework for linux ;-)

Here is how I connect to my remote SSH-based servers and hosts:

$ sshfs -o uid=1000,gid=1000 cc@remote.host.com:/home/cc /media/mountpoint

I use the uid and gid arguments to give my own normal user with those uid and gid to have write access to the mounted filesystem.

This post describes the sshfs in more details and moreover howto use it on Ubuntu and Debian.
